I investigate unresolved historical questions, overlooked stories, and expedition-worthy leads through research, evidence assessment, and real-world exploration.
I research unresolved historical questions, legends, missing places, artefacts, and overlooked documentary trails. My work focuses on building a clear evidence base, separating stronger claims from weaker ones, and identifying where a story becomes a credible investigation rather than simply an interesting tale.
I help turn promising historical leads into focused, realistic investigation plans. This can include early-stage viability assessment, research preparation, fieldwork planning, location-context work, permissions pathways, documentation strategy, and the development of a clear question that an expedition can genuinely test.
I support factual media projects that need historical research, lead assessment, expedition thinking, or an informed contributor perspective. I can help shape the research behind a story, assess whether a lead is worth pursuing, identify useful evidence routes, and contribute to the development of credible documentary or editorial work.
A selection of research, fieldwork, media, and publishing experience.
Historical research and field exploration connected with a Cornwall lead linked to the story of Henry Every. The investigation featured in the 2023 Expedition Unknown episode Treasure of the Pirate King, where I was credited under my previous name, Adam Cochrane, as “Self — Treasure Hunter — Creator: Areas Grey.”
Independent historical research and field exploration in Tenerife with explorer Rob Frey, including work connected with Amaro Pargo and the island’s deeper past. This research also contributed to a published Tenerife-focused book developed from travel, investigation, and field experience.
Areas Grey is an independent historical-investigation and exploration platform focused on the places where evidence, uncertainty, and real-world curiosity meet.
The aim is not to overstate a mystery or manufacture certainty, but to identify the strongest surviving trail, follow it carefully, and explore what remains unresolved.
